Description
The boxwood mite (Eurytetranychus buxi) is a small, destructive pest belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. Unlike many other spider mites, this species does not produce significant amounts of webbing, making its presence subtle during the initial stages of infestation.
This mite exclusively targets plants of the Buxus genus, primarily feeding on the upper surface of the leaves. By piercing the leaf cells and extracting plant sap, the mites cause localized cell death, which accumulates over time, leading to a decline in the overall health and vitality of the boxwood shrub.
Regarding its biological cycle, the mite overwinters as eggs located on the undersides of leaves. As temperatures rise in early spring, larvae emerge to begin the first generation. Throughout the warm season, the mite undergoes multiple generations, with population growth peaking during hot, dry spells, which are optimal for their reproductive rate.
Damage is characterized by distinct chlorotic spotting on the foliage. These small, light-colored stipples eventually cause the leaves to turn a dull grayish-yellow or bronze color. In cases of severe infestation, the plant may experience premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant loss of its dense, evergreen aesthetic value.
Effective management and control strategies include:

- Application of specialized acaricides when mite populations exceed damage thresholds.
