Sainfoin seed chalcid

Eurytoma onobrychidis

Description

The sainfoin seed chalcid (Eurytoma onobrychidis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eurytomidae. It is a significant threat to sainfoin cultivation, as the larvae feed exclusively on the seeds, causing substantial economic losses in seed production areas.

This pest exclusively targets sainfoin (Onobrychis species). The female wasp deposits its eggs directly into the developing ovaries of the flowers. This internal placement of eggs ensures that the larvae have immediate access to nutrients, allowing them to develop protected from external environmental factors and many natural predators.

The biological cycle follows the plant's phenology. The larvae overwinter inside the infested seeds, whether those seeds remain on the field as stubble or are stored in silos. Pupation occurs in the spring, and the emergence of adult wasps is synchronized with the onset of the sainfoin flowering period, allowing for a new generation to infest the developing seed crop.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily destructive to the seed embryo. Larval feeding leaves the seed coat intact while hollowing out the interior, which makes detection difficult without precise examination. Infestation rates can be high, leading to drastic reductions in both seed yield and germination capacity of the remaining harvest.

Management strategies for the sainfoin seed chalcid focus on cultural and chemical interventions:

  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Early harvesting of seeds to minimize the time available for larval development.
  • Deep soil tillage to bury infested plant debris and reduce adult emergence.
  • Targeted insecticide applications during the early adult flight period, specifically before the peak of plant flowering.
