Description

Systematic position. The Texas citrus mite (Eutetranychus banksi) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to cause severe damage to foliage in diverse climatic conditions, particularly in warm regions.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this mite are citrus species, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. However, the species is polyphagous and can infest various other crops including cotton, beans, papaya, and a range of ornamental plants, making it a versatile and persistent pest.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal temperature conditions, the mite reproduces rapidly, allowing for numerous generations within a single growing season. Populations tend to peak during hot and dry weather periods, which facilitate faster development and lower mortality rates.

Damage and economic importance. These mites feed primarily on the upper surface of leaves. By piercing leaf cells, they cause characteristic stippling or bleaching effects. Severe infestations lead to leaf yellowing, desiccation, and premature leaf drop. This damage reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, ultimately resulting in significant yield loss and fruit quality degradation.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Eutetranychus banksi. Key strategies include regular field scouting to monitor population densities and the application of acaricides when economic thresholds are reached. To prevent the development of resistance, it is highly recommended to rotate chemical products with different modes of action.
