Description

Systematic position. Eutetranychus pantopus belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). It is an important agricultural pest known for its specific host preferences and distinct feeding behavior compared to other common spider mite species.

Host crops. This mite primarily infests citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. It is also found on almond and peach trees. The pest typically inhabits the upper surface of the leaves, which distinguishes it from many other Tetranychid species that prefer the underside of the foliage.

Biology and life cycle. The development cycle includes egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable warm conditions, the life cycle completes in less than two weeks. Females deposit eggs along the leaf veins, which serves as a protective location and ensures larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity causes chlorotic spotting on the leaves as the mites extract chlorophyll. As the damage progresses, the spots coalesce, leading to severe leaf discoloration and premature leaf drop. This significantly impacts photosynthesis, reduces fruit yield, and weakens the overall vitality of the tree.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain mite populations below the economic threshold:

  • Constant monitoring of leaf surfaces during the peak growth season.
  • Application of specific acaricides targeted at different stages of the mite life cycle.
  • Encouraging and releasing natural biological predators, such as phytoseiid mites.
  • Maintaining optimal orchard hydration to minimize tree stress and increase resistance.
