Willow leaf sawfly

Euura laeta is a species of sawfly belonging to the family Tenthredinidae, order Hymenoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a specialized herbivore feeding on willow species (Salix). In forestry and ornamental horticulture, it is considered a pest that can significantly affect the health and aesthetic value of host plants if left unmanaged.

The primary hosts for this species include various members of the genus Salix. The sawfly is particularly attracted to young shoots and leaves during the spring and early summer. Because of its specific host requirements, the presence of these insects is often localized to stands of willows in natural riparian areas, parks, or specialized nursery settings.

The life cycle of Euura laeta consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults emerge in early spring to mate. Females use their specialized ovipositors to insert eggs into the leaf tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed immediately, progressing through several larval stages while remaining concentrated on the foliage of their host plant.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by extensive leaf consumption. Initially, signs of feeding appear as small holes or windowing, but as larvae grow, they can consume large portions of the leaf blade, often leaving only the main veins. High populations can lead to severe defoliation, which stresses the tree, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and weakens overall plant vigor.
