Willow leaf sawfly

Systematic position. Euura testaceipes belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae (common sawflies). It is a specialized pest known primarily for its ability to induce galls on the leaves of willow trees (Salix species), which serves as both its primary food source and habitat.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this sawfly is synchronized with the growth stages of its host plant. Adult females deposit their eggs into the young, tender leaves of the willow during the spring. The larvae hatch and remain within the leaf tissue, inducing the formation of specific galls where they complete their development, shielded from environmental stress.

Damage patterns. The presence of Euura testaceipes is easily identified by the formation of leaf galls—small, localized swellings that distort the shape of the leaf. As larvae consume the internal tissues, the photosynthetic capacity of the leaf is severely impaired, leading to premature chlorosis, tissue death, and early leaf drop.

Economic impact. While healthy, mature trees can usually withstand moderate infestations, Euura testaceipes can be highly detrimental to nursery stock and young ornamental willows. High infestation rates significantly impact the vigor of the plant, reduce growth rates, and decrease the commercial value of the nursery plants due to leaf disfigurement.

Control measures. Integrated pest management for this sawfly includes the following practices:

• Sanitation: Raking and destroying fallen leaves during autumn and early spring to remove overwintering pupae.
• Mechanical removal: Manually picking off leaves showing signs of gall development to reduce the local larval population.
• Chemical control: Applying systemic insecticides during the peak hatching period to target young larvae before they are fully enclosed in the galls.
• Biological control: Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids that hunt sawfly larvae.
