Systematic position. The willow leaf sawfly Euura venusta belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a specialized herbivore that completes its entire life cycle on host plants within the genus Salix, interacting specifically with leaf tissues and shoots during its developmental stages.

Host plants. The primary hosts for Euura venusta are various species of willow. The pest is frequently found in willow plantations, shelterbelts, and ornamental landscapes. It poses a significant threat to young saplings, where feeding activity can lead to stunted growth and reduced aesthetic value in urban or park settings.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs into the foliage or soft stem tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed voraciously. Depending on environmental conditions, the pupal stage typically takes place within a cocoon either in the soil or protected under leaf litter near the base of the host tree.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae are the main source of damage, as they skeletonize leaves or consume large portions of the leaf blade. Massive infestations can result in premature leaf drop, which weakens the willow tree, reduces its ability to photosynthesize, and may make the plant more susceptible to secondary fungal pathogens or environmental stressors.

Control measures. Effective management of Euura venusta requires a combination of strategies. Sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of infested leaves and debris beneath trees, are crucial for reducing overwintering populations. For chemical control, systemic insecticides applied during the early larval stage are effective. Furthermore, encouraging natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and insectivorous birds, is recommended for sustainable pest control.
