Description
Exosoma is a genus of beetles belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. As phytophagous insects, they are recognized as significant agricultural pests capable of causing substantial damage to various horticultural and vegetable crops across their native habitats.
The host range of Exosoma typically includes members of the Cucurbitaceae and Fabaceae families. Economically important crops such as cucumbers, melons, squash, and various beans are particularly susceptible. The presence of these beetles can lead to significant economic losses if left unmanaged during the critical vegetative development stages.
The life cycle of the Exosoma follows a complete metamorphosis, comprising egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult beetles are the primary life stage responsible for foliage damage. They emerge in the spring, often overwintering in the soil or under leaf litter, and immediately begin feeding on fresh vegetation to gain energy for reproduction.
