Description

The Pine needle miner (Exoteleia pinifoliella) is a micro-moth species belonging to the family Gelechiidae. This insect is a specialized pest that targets various pine species. Although small in size, its larvae are capable of causing significant physiological stress to young pine trees by mining the interior of the needles.

The host range includes various pine species such as Scots pine, Banks pine, and others. The pest is particularly problematic in nurseries, plantations, and young forest stands. Its ability to colonize large numbers of needles over a single season makes it a significant concern for silviculturists monitoring tree vitality.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adults typically emerge in late spring or early summer to mate. The female lays eggs on the pine needles. Upon hatching, the young larvae bore into the needle tissue, where they feed and develop, sheltered from environmental conditions and many predators.

The primary symptom of infestation is the yellowing and eventual browning of the needles. Because the larva mines the needle from the inside, the damage often looks like translucent streaks. Heavily infested trees show signs of premature needle drop, reduced growth rates, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, including bark beetles.
