Description
The genus Fannia belongs to the order Diptera and the family Fanniidae. Commonly known as lesser house flies, these insects are morphologically similar to common house flies but are recognized by their slender appearance and distinct, hovering flight patterns that involve rapid, darting movements.
These flies are known as agricultural pests, particularly during the seedling stage of various vegetables. While the larvae are primarily saprophagous, feeding on decaying organic matter, they can cause significant damage to young plants when population densities are high, often boring into roots, stems, and germinating seeds.
The biological cycle consists of four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit in decomposing organic material, manure, or moist soil rich in organic content. The larvae are characterized by a flattened body shape with lateral processes, which are adaptations for navigating the semi-liquid environments where they develop.
Damage symptoms include wilting of seedlings, uneven plant emergence, and necrotic lesions in the root zone. Larval feeding galleries facilitate the secondary entry of soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which rapidly decompose the plant tissues. High humidity in greenhouse environments significantly increases the risk of infestation.
Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and cultural practices. Recommended strategies include:
- Deep soil cultivation to disrupt the overwintering puparia.
- Proper composting practices to ensure material is fully decomposed and non-attractive to adults.
