The lesser house fly (Fannia scalaris) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Muscidae. It is recognized as a pest not only in sanitary environments but also in agricultural settings, where it can interact negatively with crop development and soil health.
This species is known to cause damage to various vegetable crops. The larvae are primarily attracted to decaying organic matter, but when present in high numbers in greenhouse or nursery environments, they can feed on the tender parts of germinating seeds, young roots, and the crowns of developing plants.

The larvae have a unique morphology featuring lateral processes, which allow them to navigate and survive in semi-liquid environments rich in decomposing organic matter.
