Originating from North America, this invasive species has successfully established itself in European freshwater systems. It possesses high environmental adaptability, allowing it to displace native crayfish populations while acting as a vector for the lethal crayfish plague, which poses a severe ecological threat.

From an agronomic perspective, this species is highly problematic for aquaculture, irrigation systems, and agricultural reservoirs. The crayfish builds extensive burrows in embankments and levees, causing structural damage to water management systems. This leads to water leakage, erosion of irrigation banks, and significant maintenance costs for agricultural infrastructure.

The biology of Faxonius limosus is defined by high reproductive rates and early maturation. Mating occurs in the autumn, with eggs carried over the winter until spring hatching. The larvae develop rapidly in warm, standing water. Adults are capable of terrestrial migration, allowing them to colonize new irrigation channels and isolated water bodies effectively during periods of rain or high humidity.

The damage caused by this crayfish is largely due to its omnivorous diet. It consumes aquatic vegetation, fish eggs, and essential benthic organisms. In rice-growing regions, the spiny-cheek crayfish causes economic losses by feeding on young rice shoots, cutting through stems, and disrupting plant density, which significantly reduces total crop yield in flooded fields.

Control measures require a multi-faceted approach. Mechanical removal using specific traps remains the primary method for population suppression. Seasonal draining of ponds during winter is highly effective at reducing density. Furthermore, installing physical barriers such as fine-mesh screens on irrigation inlets helps prevent the spread of the crayfish into sensitive agricultural zones and fish breeding farms.
