Taxonomic position: The rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Cambaridae. It is a highly aggressive invasive species originating from the Ohio River Basin in North America, which has now established itself in numerous water systems, causing ecological imbalances and interfering with water-dependent agricultural operations.

Crops and habitats affected: This crustacean primarily damages aquatic vegetation, including pondweeds, elodea, and wild celery. By denuding underwater habitats, it indirectly impacts agricultural zones that rely on ponds or streams for irrigation, as the depletion of aquatic plants leads to water quality degradation and sediment instability.

Biology and life cycle: Rusty crayfish reach sexual maturity within one to two years. Mating occurs in late summer or autumn, with egg-laying taking place the following spring. Females carry the eggs beneath their tails until they hatch. Their rapid growth rate and aggressive territorial behavior allow them to outcompete native crayfish species, leading to population explosions within a few seasons.
