Birch leaf miner

The birch leaf miner (Fenusa pumila) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a significant defoliating pest that specializes in birch trees (Betula spp.), often causing aesthetic damage and long-term health decline in both landscape and forest trees.

This pest primarily attacks various species of birch, especially young trees and those in stressed conditions. Its presence is most frequently observed in temperate climate zones, where birch is a common ornamental or forest species, leading to massive leaf browning during the summer months.

The life cycle begins when adult sawflies emerge in the spring to lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae create tunnels or "mines" within the leaf, feeding on the green internal tissue while leaving the epidermis intact. Depending on the climate, the insect can produce two or more generations annually.

The damage manifests as blotch mines that eventually coalesce, causing the leaves to curl, turn brown, and fall prematurely. Heavy infestations can lead to significant canopy thinning, reducing the tree's ability to photosynthesize and making it susceptible to secondary stressors like drought or fungal pathogens.
