Birch leafminer

Systematic position: The birch leafminer (Fenusa pusilla) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a significant specialist pest known for targeting the foliage of birch trees across various regions, often causing substantial aesthetic and physiological damage.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest include several species of the genus Betula, particularly the grey birch, paper birch, and European white birch. It is particularly problematic in ornamental landscapes, municipal plantings, and forest nurseries where healthy foliage is a priority.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as a larva within a cocoon buried in the soil. Adults emerge in the spring, coinciding with the development of new birch leaves. Females deposit their eggs individually into the leaf tissue. Depending on the geographical location and temperature, the birch leafminer can complete several generations throughout the growing season.

Damage and economic importance: Larvae feed internally on the parenchyma of the leaves, creating irregular, blotch-like mines. These mines quickly turn brown and dry out, giving the tree a scorched appearance. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, weakens its vigor, and may make it more susceptible to other secondary pests or environmental stresses.

Management practices:
