Ferdinandea is a genus of flies belonging to the family Syrphidae, commonly known as hoverflies. While many hoverflies are beneficial pollinators or aphid predators, the genus Ferdinandea is ecologically distinct, with larvae that are often associated with the decaying sap or wood of broad-leaved trees, occasionally causing problems in damaged or stressed plant tissues.

Taxonomically, this genus belongs to the order Diptera, family Syrphidae. In agricultural and silvicultural practice, they are considered secondary pests. They thrive in environments where tree bark has been compromised, as the larvae exploit the chemical changes occurring in wounded or necrotic woody tissues to complete their development.

The host range includes various deciduous trees such as oaks, beeches, birches, and occasionally fruit trees. Orchards or ornamental forests with old-growth trees or trees suffering from environmental stress are the most susceptible. The presence of these flies often correlates with poor tree health or existing physical damage.

The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult flies are typically strong fliers that visit flowers. Females lay eggs near cracks in the bark or existing wounds. The larvae reside under the bark, feeding on the fermenting sap and decaying plant tissue, which can expand the damaged area and create openings for fungal pathogens to enter.

The economic impact is primarily seen in the deterioration of tree bark and the facilitation of infection pathways for other pests and diseases. Control strategies focus on proactive tree maintenance: keeping trees vigorous, promptly treating mechanical bark damage with suitable wound dressings, and removing heavily infested, dying wood to prevent the buildup of pest populations.
