Filistata
Filistata
Description
Taxonomic position. Filistata is a genus of spiders belonging to the order Araneae and the family Filistatidae. These arachnids are characterized by their unique tubular webs, which they construct in cracks, crevices, and among dense plant foliage, making them a common sight in Mediterranean-type climates and gardens.
Affected crops. While Filistata are not direct herbivores, they frequently inhabit ornamental shrubs, vineyards, and fruit trees. Their presence is particularly problematic in nurseries where dense plant architecture provides perfect conditions for their complex web structures, which can interfere with routine maintenance.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females of this genus are long-lived and exhibit sophisticated maternal behavior, guarding their egg sacs within silk-lined retreats. This high level of parental investment allows local populations to persist for extended periods in stable garden environments.
Damage and pest status. The damage caused by Filistata is primarily indirect. Their dense, parchment-like webs accumulate debris and trap moisture, creating favorable niches for fungal pathogens and soot mold development. Furthermore, excessive webbing can cause leaf desiccation and inhibit proper photosynthesis by blocking light.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach. Key strategies include:
- Regular pruning of old wood and dead branches to remove nesting sites.
- Mechanical removal of webs using high-pressure water spray to disrupt their structures.
- Application of specialized acaricides if populations reach levels that compromise plant vigor.
- Maintaining proper spacing between plants to reduce humidity and prevent web formation.
