Frankliniella bispinosa, commonly known as the Florida flower thrips, is a significant member of the Thripidae family within the order Thysanoptera. This insect is recognized as a major pest in both commercial agriculture and horticultural settings due to its high reproductive potential and diverse feeding habits.
The pest has an extremely broad host range, feeding on numerous plant species including citrus, strawberries, ornamental flowers, and various vegetables. It is particularly attracted to the blossoms and developing fruit, where it finds optimal food sources and shelter within the complex structures of the flowers.
The life cycle of this thrips species typically progresses through egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Because these stages occur rapidly, particularly in warm temperatures, populations can build up to damaging levels in a very short amount of time. The pupal stage often occurs in the soil, which adds complexity to its control.
Damage caused by feeding involves stippling, scarring of fruit surfaces, and the distortion of petals and leaves. Heavy infestations often lead to premature bud drop and stunted growth. Furthermore, as with many thrips species, it can serve as a vector for various plant viruses, causing systemic infection that poses a severe threat to crop yield and quality.

This includes the use of blue or yellow sticky traps for population monitoring, the release of biological controls like predatory mites or pirate bugs, and the application of targeted insecticides.
