West Indian flower thrips (Frankliniella insularis) is a significant polyphagous pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This tiny insect is recognized globally for its ability to infest a wide variety of plant species, causing severe economic losses in both open fields and protected greenhouse environments.

This pest affects a diverse range of crops, including legumes, solanaceous plants, and various ornamental flowers. Due to their small size and cryptic habits, they often remain unnoticed within flower buds and tender foliage until significant damage has already occurred to the host plants.

The life cycle of Frankliniella insularis consists of egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. The developmental rate is strongly influenced by ambient temperature, with warmer conditions facilitating rapid completion of the life cycle. The species is highly prolific, and populations can explode within a short timeframe, making frequent inspections necessary.

Feeding behavior involves piercing plant tissues and sucking cell contents, which causes characteristic silvering, necrosis, and distortion of leaves and petals. Beyond direct physical damage, these thrips are vectors for several damaging plant viruses, significantly reducing both the quality and marketable yield of the affected crops.
