Lily thrips (Frankliniella lilivora) is a significant pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These minute insects are highly specialized in feeding on ornamental plants, particularly targeting lilies, and are known to cause severe aesthetic and physiological damage to crops in greenhouses and gardens.

The primary host plants for Frankliniella lilivora are species within the Liliaceae family. Adult thrips and their larvae feed by piercing the plant tissue and extracting cell sap, preferentially colonizing the developing buds and the undersides of young leaves, which leads to stunted growth.

The biology of this species is temperature-dependent, allowing for a rapid life cycle. The development from egg to adult goes through several stages including larval and pupal forms. In favorable conditions, such as warm, dry environments, the population can increase exponentially, making them particularly challenging to control once established.

Signs of infestation include distorted, malformed buds that may fail to bloom correctly, and characteristic silvery or stippled streaks on the leaves. Black fecal spots are often visible on the surface of the plant tissue, serving as a diagnostic indicator of thrips presence.
