Description
Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is one of the most destructive agricultural pests worldwide, belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Due to its polyphagous nature and rapid reproductive rate, it has become a major challenge for commercial greenhouse production globally.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including vegetable crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, as well as numerous ornamental species such as roses and chrysanthemums. It thrives in sheltered environments, where it can complete multiple generations throughout the year if temperatures remain constant.
The life cycle of the thrips includes egg, two larval stages, two pupal stages, and the adult phase. Eggs are inserted into the plant tissue, making them difficult to target. The developmental speed is highly temperature-dependent, allowing populations to explode within weeks during warmer seasons or in greenhouse conditions.
Damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on cell contents, resulting in characteristic silvering or scarring of leaves and deformed buds or flowers. More importantly, it serves as the primary vector for tospoviruses, such as the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), which causes severe systemic damage and plant death.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Producers should utilize sticky blue traps for early detection and monitor the population density constantly. Control strategies should integrate chemical insecticides with biological controls such as predatory mites (Amblyseius spp.) and bugs, while maintaining strict greenhouse hygiene to break the pest's cycle.
