Systematic position: The pale thrips (Frankliniella pallida) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is recognized as a significant pest of both horticultural and greenhouse crops, often causing severe economic losses if not managed correctly.

Host plants: This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide range of host plants. Major economic crops affected include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and various leguminous plants. It also thrives on numerous weeds, which act as a reservoir for the pest between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several distinct stages: egg, two larval stages, propupa, pupa, and adult. Eggs are inserted into plant tissues, such as leaves or petals. Development is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer climates significantly shortening the generation time, leading to rapid population explosions.

Damage and economic impact: Both larvae and adults damage plants by piercing cells and extracting sap. This feeding behavior results in characteristic silvering, necrotic spots, and tissue distortion. Heavy infestations lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, flower abortion, and potential transmission of plant viruses that can kill entire crops.

Control measures: Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Using blue or yellow sticky traps for regular monitoring and population suppression.
• Sanitation, including the removal of weeds and crop residues from greenhouses and fields.
• Biological control through the release of predatory mites or beneficial insects.
• Applying systemic or contact insecticides, ensuring a rotation of chemical classes to prevent resistance.
• Maintaining proper greenhouse hygiene, including disinfection of tools and structures between cycles.
