Banana thrips (Frankliniella parvula) is a species of the order Thysanoptera and family Thripidae. This pest is widely distributed across tropical agricultural regions and is considered a significant economic threat to banana cultivation and commercial fruit production.
The primary hosts for this insect are plants belonging to the genus Musa. The pest specifically targets developing fruits, flowers, and the base of young leaves. By sheltering in these protected areas, they can cause damage that is often difficult to detect until the signs of feeding become pronounced.
The biological life cycle of Frankliniella parvula includes the egg, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and the adult stage. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. Under optimal tropical conditions, these insects can complete multiple generations in a single year, leading to rapid population outbreaks.
The feeding activity of these thrips causes severe damage to the fruit skin. As they pierce the plant cells to feed on sap, they leave behind necrotic spots, scarring, and surface blemishes.
