Description

Corn thrips, known as Frankliniella williamsi, belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is recognized as a persistent pest of maize crops, particularly in regions with warm, semi-arid conditions where the insect can thrive throughout the growing season.

The primary host for this pest is maize, but it also colonizes various wild grasses and sorghum. These insects primarily inhabit the leaf whorls and the space between the leaf sheath and the stem, making them difficult to detect until substantial damage has already occurred.

The life cycle of the corn thrips includes egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. High temperatures significantly shorten the developmental time, allowing multiple generations to occur within a single maize growing season, which leads to rapid population spikes.

Damage symptoms include leaf chlorosis, silvery streaking, and twisting of the leaf whorl. Severe infestations can stunt the plant growth significantly, reducing the photosynthetic area and ultimately leading to yield loss by affecting ear development and grain filling processes.
