Western flower thrips

The Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is a notorious polyphagous pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Originally from western North America, it has spread globally, becoming one of the most significant and economically damaging pests in greenhouses and field crops due to its high reproductive rate and resistance to many insecticides.

This pest has an exceptionally broad host range, feeding on hundreds of plant species. Key crops affected include vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini, as well as various ornamental and flowering plants. Its ability to infest blossoms and developing fruit causes direct economic losses to growers worldwide.

The biology of the Western flower thrips is characterized by a rapid life cycle. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect completes its development from egg to adult in as little as 10 to 15 days. Females lay eggs inside plant tissues, and the pupal stages often occur in the soil or protected areas of the plant, which complicates standard pest management efforts.

Damage is caused both by larvae and adults feeding on plant cells. Symptoms include leaf silvering, stippling, and deformation of flowers and fruits. Furthermore, the species is a major vector for plant viruses, particularly the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), which can lead to complete failure of crop yields in greenhouse production systems.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Using blue or yellow sticky traps for population monitoring and early detection.
• Implementing rigorous sanitation to eliminate weed reservoirs inside and around greenhouses.
• Deploying biological control agents such as predatory mites (e.g., Amblyseius cucumeris) and predatory bugs (Orius spp.).
• Rotating insecticides with different modes of action to delay the development of pesticide resistance.
• Maintaining optimal greenhouse climate conditions that are less favorable for rapid thrips multiplication.
