The northern palm squirrel (Funambulus pennanti) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Sciuridae. Recognized by the three distinct longitudinal stripes on its back, this species is considered a significant agricultural pest in various regions, where it frequently attacks orchard fruit and field crops.
This rodent is highly opportunistic and targets a diverse range of crops. It is particularly damaging to mango, guava, citrus fruits, and coconuts. Additionally, the squirrel causes heavy losses in grain fields, specifically maize, by consuming seeds and seedlings, which can severely impact both the quality and quantity of the harvest.
The biology of the species supports its role as a pest due to its high reproductive rate and adaptability. Breeding occurs multiple times a year, with nests often constructed in tree hollows or crevices in human infrastructure. Their ability to thrive in close proximity to human settlements makes them persistent invaders of cultivated land.
The primary form of damage involves the gnawing of fruits, seeds, and even the bark of young tree trunks. This behavior not only results in the loss of produce but also weakens the host plants, making them susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections that enter through the bite marks on the plant tissue.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Physical barriers, such as metal bands attached to tree trunks, are the most effective method to prevent squirrels from climbing. Furthermore, proactive pruning to isolate tree crowns from buildings and other trees, combined with the removal of potential nesting sites, significantly reduces the pressure from these pests on agricultural operations.
