Gaeolaelaps aculeifer is a soil-dwelling mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Laelapidae. While frequently utilized as a biological control agent for sciarid flies and thrips, it is also known to exhibit facultative phytophagy, meaning it can shift to feeding on plant tissues, particularly root hairs, when prey availability is low.

The primary hosts of this mite include greenhouse-grown vegetables, such as cucumbers, and various ornamental species, especially those propagated in containers or plugs. The damage is most acute during the initial stages of plant growth, as the mite prefers the damp environment of the topsoil where seedling roots develop.

The life cycle of Gaeolaelaps aculeifer comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. These mites thrive in high-humidity conditions and temperatures typically maintained in greenhouse facilities. Their ability to switch food sources, including organic debris and roots, allows them to maintain stable populations regardless of prey density.

Direct damage to plants occurs when the mites feed on root hairs, causing stunting, chlorosis, and general decline in plant vigor. This feeding damage often creates entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens, leading to root rot and significant economic losses in seedling production facilities where consistent plant development is crucial.
