The mite Laelaps algericus belongs to the order Mesostigmata, family Laelapidae. These are members of the gamasid mite group, which are typically associated with parasitizing small mammals in natural environments; however, their presence in soil layers and plant substrates necessitates attention from agronomists and crop protection specialists.

This species is characterized by high ecological plasticity. In agroecosystems, these mites can be found in the root zone of various vegetable and ornamental crops, especially when organic substrates are used or in greenhouse environments where the microclimate promotes active reproduction.

The life cycle includes the stages of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Unlike highly specialized phytophages, Laelaps algericus possesses a mixed feeding strategy.
