The beetles and their larvae are most frequently found on various types of goosefoot and saltwort, though they can migrate to beet crops in high-density populations, causing considerable damage to the foliage.

Biology and life cycle of this insect follow a process of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles overwinter in the upper soil layers or under plant debris. In the spring, when temperatures stabilize, the beetles begin feeding, followed by oviposition on the leaves of host plants. The hatching larvae then actively consume the plant tissues.

Damage patterns and harmfulness manifest as leaf skeletonization. Larvae chew through the epidermis and parenchyma, leaving behind only a network of veins. This damage disrupts photosynthesis, and in cases of mass infestation, leads to premature wilting and drying of the plants, ultimately reducing yield and quality.

Control measures include a combination of agrotechnical and chemical strategies. The most critical component is effective weed control, as weeds serve as primary reservoirs for the pest, along with strict adherence to crop rotation practices. If the economic threshold of infestation is exceeded, the application of systemic or contact-stomach insecticides registered for use on the specific crop is recommended.
