Description
The extended leaf beetle (Galeruca extensa) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This insect acts as a specialized pest that can cause significant damage to plantations in specific regions, feeding primarily on various wild and cultivated plant species.
This pest mainly damages diverse herbaceous plants. It is most frequently encountered on representatives of families within its dietary range, including certain vegetable crops and ornamental plants, where it is capable of rapid reproduction under favorable weather conditions.
The biology of the leaf beetle is characterized by a complete transformation cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult specimens hibernate in the soil or under plant debris, emerging as temperatures rise. Active breeding occurs in spring and summer when females deposit eggs on the leaves or stems of host plants.
The damage pattern manifests as the skeletonization of leaf blades. Adult beetles and larvae consume the leaf tissue, leaving only the veins, which results in a reduction of the plant's photosynthetic activity. During mass outbreaks, the pest can completely destroy the foliage, which critically affects overall crop yield.
Protection measures include both agrotechnical and chemical approaches. It is important to perform deep autumn plowing to destroy hibernation sites of the adults, as well as ensure the timely removal of weeds. If the economic threshold of damage is exceeded, the use of approved contact-stomach insecticides is recommended.
