Lotus leaf beetle

Systematic position. The lotus leaf beetle (Galerucella birmanica) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This pest is highly specialized and relies almost exclusively on lotus plants (Nelumbo spp.) for its nutrition and reproductive cycle, making it a significant challenge for growers of these aquatic plants.

Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary host is the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Both adults and larvae cause severe damage by feeding on the leaf tissues. They typically create irregular holes or skeletonize the leaves entirely. This damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to premature leaf senescence, weakened rootstocks, and significantly lower yields of floral and seed production.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Galerucella birmanica is strictly aquatic. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the surfaces of lotus leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding voraciously. After several larval instars, they pupate within cocoons attached to the foliage. Depending on ambient water temperatures, multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, allowing for rapid population explosions.

Economic impact. The impact of this beetle is most devastating during the peak growing months. By significantly reducing leaf area, the pest disrupts the plant's metabolic balance. If left uncontrolled, high-density populations can defoliate large sections of a pond or plantation, forcing the plant to redirect energy from flower production to leaf regeneration, which harms the commercial viability of the crop.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this beetle. Management strategies include:

• Frequent monitoring and manual removal of egg masses and larvae in smaller ponds.
• Use of biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis, which are generally safe for non-target aquatic organisms.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing debris from the water surface after the season.
• Maintaining optimal water conditions to ensure the lotus plants have enough vigor to recover from minor damage.
