Willow leaf beetle

Galerucella decora

Description

Systematic position. The willow leaf beetle (Galerucella decora) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. As a specialized feeder, it is a significant pest that commonly affects willow species, particularly in riparian habitats and urban plantings where these trees are prevalent.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts include various species of the Salix genus and sometimes Populus. Both adult beetles and larvae exhibit skeletonizing behavior, consuming the soft leaf tissue while leaving the veins intact. This results in severe defoliation, which causes significant stress to the host plant, especially in young or stressed specimens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as an adult, finding shelter under leaf litter or within crevices in tree bark. Once temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae develop over several weeks before pupating, often near the base of the tree or on the foliage itself.

Economic impact. Outbreaks of Galerucella decora can lead to widespread defoliation, affecting tree growth and overall health. Continued damage reduces photosynthetic efficiency, leading to stunted growth and increased susceptibility to other environmental stressors, diseases, or secondary pest infestations that may kill the tree over time.

Management strategies. Effective control measures include:

  • Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying fallen leaves to reduce overwintering sites.
  • Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis during the peak larval emergence.
  • Targeted use of systemic or contact insecticides when population densities exceed economic thresholds.
  • Conservation of natural predators, such as predatory bugs and ground beetles, that help maintain low population levels.
