Raspberry leaf beetle

The Raspberry leaf beetle (Galerucella rubi) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This pest is known for its preference for certain Rosaceae species, frequently causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to plants in private gardens and agricultural fields.

The host range is primarily limited to Rubus species, specifically raspberries and blackberries. Both adults and larvae contribute to the damage, as they feed aggressively on the foliage, significantly affecting the plant's photosynthetic capacity throughout the growing season.

The lifecycle typically includes hibernation as an adult beetle in debris, soil, or sheltered areas near the host plants. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed and begin the reproductive cycle, laying eggs on the leaves, which leads to the development of several generations depending on the regional climate.

Damage is characterized by distinct leaf skeletonizing and irregular holes scattered across the leaflets. High populations of the beetle can lead to severe defoliation, which causes poor fruit set, reduced berry size, and a decrease in the plant's overall vigor as they prepare for the dormant winter period.
