The red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) belongs to the order Galliformes and the family Phasianidae. As the primary ancestor of the domestic chicken, it inhabits tropical forests in Southeast Asia. In regions where agriculture borders these habitats, this species is frequently classified as a pest due to its destructive foraging habits in commercial fields.

These birds feed on a variety of seeds, fruits, young shoots, and soil-dwelling insects. In agricultural environments, they pose a significant threat to cereal crops, vegetables, and fruit seedlings. Their instinctive behavior of scratching the soil to uncover food sources often results in the destruction of plant root systems and the trampling of emerging crops.

The biology of the species is defined by high diurnal activity levels. With a life cycle tied to seasonal availability of food, they demonstrate high adaptability. Their habit of nesting on the ground facilitates quick transit between forest covers and agricultural fields, allowing them to repeatedly forage on newly sown crops or young vegetable sprouts throughout the growing season.

The damage caused is characterized by the consumption of sown seeds, the destruction of delicate seedlings, and the scratching of fruit crops near the ground level. The harmful impact includes reduced crop density, stunted plant growth due to root damage, and significant yield losses, particularly in fields of rice, maize, and legumes situated near forest edges.
