Gammarus pulex

Description

Systematic position: Gammarus pulex belongs to the order Amphipoda and the family Gammaridae. While primarily aquatic crustaceans, they are increasingly recognized as opportunistic pests in greenhouse agriculture, nurseries, and hydroponic systems where excessive moisture provides a viable habitat.

Crops affected: These crustaceans primarily threaten young seedlings, delicate vegetable starts, and ornamental plants. Crops grown in organic-rich, water-saturated substrates are particularly susceptible to infestation, as the damp environment mimics the natural habitat required for their survival.

Biology and life cycle: Gammarus pulex are detritivores, but in confined environments with limited food sources, they readily shift to feeding on living plant tissues. They reproduce rapidly in aquatic or semi-aquatic conditions, with females carrying eggs in a brood pouch, leading to a quick buildup of population density in favorable conditions.

Nature of damage and harm: The pests graze on root systems and the base of plant stems. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, wilting, and, in severe cases, the total loss of young seedlings.

Control measures: Management of these pests centers on optimizing drainage and preventing standing water in production areas. Regular sterilization of soil media and the removal of organic debris are crucial preventative steps. Since these organisms cannot survive desiccation, drying out the surface layers of the soil is often the most effective non-chemical control strategy.
