Broom treehopper

The broom treehopper (Gargara genistae) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Membracidae. Like other members of its family, it is characterized by an enlarged pronotum that often takes on bizarre shapes, providing natural camouflage against its host plants. It is primarily recognized as a specialized feeder on specific shrubbery.

The primary hosts of this species include plants from the Fabaceae family, such as Genista (broom) and Laburnum species. In agricultural and horticultural settings, they can infest ornamental legumes and some leguminous crops. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing the plant tissues and extracting nutrient-rich phloem sap.

The life cycle of Gargara genistae follows a hemimetabolous pattern. Eggs are usually overwintered within the woody stems of the host plants. In spring, nymphs emerge and start feeding on developing shoots. As they grow through several molts, they stay together in colonies, which makes them highly visible during the peak of the growing season.

The damage caused by the broom treehopper includes stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and wilting of infested shoots. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew by the insects creates a sticky surface on the foliage, which encourages the growth of sooty mold. This fungus can coat the leaves, effectively blocking sunlight and reducing the plant's overall photosynthetic capability.

Managing populations of this pest requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping plants healthy through proper fertilization and pruning helps increase their tolerance to infestations. If colony numbers become problematic, systematic application of horticultural oils or approved insecticides, specifically targeting the nymphal stages, can significantly reduce the pressure of this pest on the vegetation.
