Pistachio moth

Systematic position. The pistachio moth (Gelechia pistaciae) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gelechiidae. It is recognized as a significant specialist herbivore, specifically adapted to feed on plants within the Pistacia genus.

Host crops. The primary host for this pest is the common pistachio (Pistacia vera). The moth is particularly problematic in commercial orchards where it targets cultivated pistachio trees, affecting both their vegetative growth and long-term reproductive capacity.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Gelechia pistaciae is highly synchronized with the growth phases of the host tree. The insect typically overwinters as a mature larva or pupa hidden within plant debris or bark crevices. Adult moths emerge in spring to initiate mating and egg-laying on emerging buds and young foliage, ensuring larvae have an immediate food source upon hatching.

Damage patterns and economic importance. The larvae feed on the leaf parenchyma, often creating webs that cause leaves to roll up or tie together. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, which significantly weakens the tree, reduces photosynthetic efficiency, and directly causes a decline in yield and nut quality, posing a threat to orchard profitability.

Control measures. Effective management of the pistachio moth requires a multi-faceted approach to reduce population density and damage:

• Sanitation practices, such as removing and burning fallen leaves and debris, to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Application of selective insecticides during critical periods, specifically targeting the larval stage before they become protected by leaf rolls.
• Use of pheromone traps for monitoring populations and determining optimal treatment timing.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids that contribute to biological suppression of the pest.
