Poplar leaf-mining moth

Systematic position. The poplar leaf-mining moth (Gelechia turpella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is a specialized pest that primarily targets trees within the Populus genus, impacting both forest plantations and urban ornamental landscapes.

Host plants and nature of damage. The larvae feed on various poplar species, causing significant aesthetic and structural damage. Initially, they attack developing buds, and as the season progresses, they move to the leaves. The larvae spin silk to fold leaves or create nests, feeding on the leaf tissue inside, which results in skeletal damage and premature leaf drop.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Overwintering occurs primarily as young larvae tucked into crevices in the tree bark or within leaf litter on the ground. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on opening buds. Pupation usually takes place in late spring or summer within the shelter of spun leaves.

Economic importance. Severe infestations lead to widespread defoliation, which severely stresses the trees. Persistent annual damage weakens the vitality of poplar stands, reduces radial growth, and predisposes trees to secondary infestations by bark beetles or wood-boring insects, ultimately reducing the lifespan of the host plant.

Control measures. Effective management of Gelechia turpella relies on an integrated approach:

• Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying fallen leaves in the autumn to reduce the overwintering population.
• Timely application of systemic insecticides during the early bud-break stage to target young larvae.
• Utilization of biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis for environmentally safer control.
• Monitoring pheromone traps to determine the optimal timing for intervention and evaluating the presence of natural enemies.
