Geomalacus

Geomalacus is a genus of air-breathing land slugs belonging to the family Arionidae and the order Stylommatophora. These gastropods are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural and horticultural environments. Characterized by their muscular bodies and mucus production, they thrive in damp habitats where they pose a persistent threat to vegetable and ornamental plant production.

These slugs impact a wide range of botanical species. Their primary targets include leafy vegetables, strawberries, potatoes, and young seedling stock. They are particularly troublesome in nurseries and greenhouses where controlled irrigation and high humidity provide ideal living conditions, often leading to rapid colonization and extensive feeding damage on tender plant tissues.

The biology and lifecycle of Geomalacus are highly dependent on moisture levels. Being hermaphroditic, they demonstrate a high rate of reproduction, laying clusters of eggs in moist soil or under decaying organic matter. The life cycle involves distinct stages from eggs to juveniles and finally adults, with their activity cycles being predominantly nocturnal or triggered by rainfall, when they emerge to feed extensively.

Feeding damage is characterized by ragged holes in leaves and deep gouges in fruits or tubers, caused by the slug's rasping tongue, known as a radula. The secondary harm is just as severe: the slimy secretions left behind not only contaminate the harvested produce, rendering it unmarketable, but also serve as a vector for various bacterial and fungal pathogens that accelerate rot in already damaged plant tissues.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key agricultural practices include regular soil cultivation to disturb egg clusters, weed management to eliminate refuges, and improving drainage to reduce excess humidity. Chemical control is achieved through the use of specific molluscicides, such as iron phosphate baits, which are effective while minimizing the impact on non-target organisms and the environment.
