Systematic position. The Kerry spotted slug (Geomalacus maculosus) belongs to the order Stylommatophora and the family Arionidae. This species is a terrestrial gastropod mollusk characterized by its unique spotted mantle and body pattern, which makes it distinct among other slug species in its native range.

Host plants. The pest exhibits a wide host range, posing a threat to various horticultural and agricultural crops. It frequently infests vegetable gardens, strawberry patches, soft fruit plantations, and ornamental nurseries. In damp environments, it can quickly move between plants, consuming tender foliage and stems.

Biology and life cycle. Geomalacus maculosus is a hermaphroditic species that thrives in high-humidity habitats. Reproduction is highly dependent on environmental moisture; eggs are deposited in moist soil, under logs, or beneath leaf litter. The development rate is temperature-dependent, with increased activity observed during mild, wet weather conditions throughout the growing season.

Damage and economic impact. These slugs feed using a rasping organ called the radula, which shreds plant tissues. They cause irregular holes in leaves, strip young seedlings, and damage ripening fruits. Beyond direct physical consumption, the slime trails left by the slugs act as vectors for fungal and bacterial pathogens, leading to rapid decay and loss of marketable produce.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the pest's impact:

• Maintaining clean cultivation by removing debris and weeds to reduce potential shelter.
• Implementing physical barriers such as crushed eggshells or copper tape to protect sensitive crops.
• Utilizing biological control agents, such as specialized nematodes, which target the slug population.
• Applying certified molluscicides strictly according to safety guidelines during periods of high pest density.
