Cereal fly

The cereal fly (Geomyza combinata) is a species of insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Geomyzidae. This pest is a significant threat to agricultural production, particularly impacting grain yields in regions where cereal cultivation is intensive and climate conditions favor its development.

The primary hosts of this pest are various members of the Poaceae family. These include winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The fly also utilizes wild grasses as alternative hosts, which often complicates control efforts because these grasses act as reservoirs for the pest population throughout the year.

The life cycle of Geomyza combinata consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female flies lay their eggs near the base of young cereal plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stems and feed on the soft internal tissues, which destroys the growing point and disrupts the plant's vascular system.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct and economically damaging. Infested plants typically show wilting of the central leaf, which eventually turns yellow and dies. This process stunts plant growth and significantly reduces the number of productive tillers, leading to thin stands and substantial yield losses if infestations are severe.

Integrated management strategies for controlling this pest include:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Controlling grassy weeds in and around fields to remove alternative breeding sites.
• Adjusting sowing dates; early sowing for spring crops and late sowing for winter crops can avoid the peak flight of the flies.

• Applying foliar insecticides when monitoring indicates that the economic threshold for the pest has been exceeded.
