Common pine sawfly

The Common pine sawfly (scientific name Gilpinia socia) is a significant insect pest that belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. This species is specifically adapted to feed on coniferous trees, primarily pines, and is known for its gregarious larval stages, which can cause severe defoliation across forest stands.

This pest mainly targets various pine species, including the Scots pine. The primary damage is inflicted by the larvae, often referred to as false caterpillars, which consume the needles of host trees. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial loss of foliage, which weakens the tree, reduces annual growth, and may lead to tree mortality if the infestation persists over several seasons.

The biological life cycle of Gilpinia socia involves several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit their eggs into slits cut into the pine needles. Once hatched, the larvae feed in groups, progressing through several instars. Pupation typically occurs in tough, dark cocoons located in the leaf litter or soil at the base of the tree, where the insect remains until the next season.

The characteristic damage caused by this sawfly includes the skeletonizing and complete consumption of needles. At first, the larvae may only graze the edges, but as they grow, they consume entire needles, leaving only the stubby bases. This loss of photosynthetic capacity causes the tree to enter a state of stress, making it highly susceptible to secondary attacks by bark beetles or wood-boring insects.

Effective management and control programs for the Common pine sawfly focus on early detection and integrated pest management (IPM). Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the early larval development stage, which is the most vulnerable period.
