Giraffe weevil

The Giraffe weevil (Trachelophorus giraffa) is a distinctive member of the Attelabidae family within the order Coleoptera. Known primarily for the elongated neck of the male, this insect is a specialized leaf-rolling weevil. While primarily recognized for its unique morphology, its feeding behavior on foliage can categorize it as a pest in certain silvicultural and ornamental nursery environments.

The life cycle of the Giraffe weevil is defined by its sophisticated nesting behavior. The female performs intricate incisions on the leaves of host plants to facilitate folding them into a tight, cigar-shaped cylinder. An egg is placed within this protective leaf roll, which acts as a nursery for the developing larva, providing both food and shelter throughout its larval stages until pupation.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily cosmetic and physiological. By rolling and consuming sections of the leaf, the weevil reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant. In cases of significant infestation, the aesthetic value of decorative shrubs or young saplings is compromised, and severe defoliation can lead to stunted growth or decreased vigor of the host plant species.

Identification of the pest is typically achieved through visual inspection of the canopy. The presence of dried, tightly rolled leaf clusters is a clear indicator of activity. Because the larva is protected inside the leaf roll, conventional contact pesticides are often ineffective once the leaf has been fully sealed, necessitating timing control measures during the adult flight and egg-laying period.

Management strategies focus on cultural and chemical control. Physical removal and destruction of rolled leaves are the most effective non-chemical methods to prevent the next generation from emerging. For professional management in nurseries, systemic insecticides may be applied to the foliage during the early stages of infestation to disrupt the adult egg-laying activity and larval survival.
