The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an artiodactyl mammal within the Giraffidae family. From an agronomic perspective, it acts as a significant herbivorous pest, particularly within agroforestry systems where it exerts strong pressure on woody plant species through selective browsing and defoliation.
The giraffe's diet consists primarily of leaves and young shoots from trees and shrubs. They are particularly known for their impact on Acacia spp. and other leguminous trees. By utilizing their specialized anatomy, giraffes can forage at canopy levels inaccessible to smaller herbivores, making them a unique threat to the crown development of commercial forest stands.
