Gliricola is a genus of biting lice belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Gyropidae. These obligate ectoparasites primarily infest rodents. In an agricultural and veterinary context, Gliricola is recognized as a significant pest affecting the welfare and productivity of small mammals maintained within research or specialized breeding facilities that often form part of broader agricultural enterprises.

The biology of Gliricola is characterized by a life cycle that occurs entirely on the host animal. The insects undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with every stage of development—from egg to nymph and adult—taking place within the host's fur. This adaptation makes them highly successful at colonizing their hosts, as the eggs, known as nits, are cemented firmly to individual hairs to prevent removal during grooming.

Damage caused by this pest is manifested through intense skin irritation, which induces excessive scratching and biting by the host. This behavior leads to self-inflicted wounds, hair loss (alopecia), and significant stress for the animals. In terms of economic impact, such infestations result in decreased vitality, stunted growth, and a loss of quality in the animal's coat, which is particularly relevant in high-value animal breeding.

The harmfulness of Gliricola is compounded by its rapid transmission rate within confined environments. Since these parasites do not survive long away from their host, transmission is almost exclusively through direct contact. This makes overcrowding a primary driver of infestation, necessitating strict management practices to maintain the health and sanitation of the breeding environment.
