Gyropus ovalis, commonly known as the oval guinea pig louse, is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Gyropidae. While it is not a threat to crops, it is a significant concern for those involved in small-animal husbandry and rodent farming, acting as a pest that impacts animal health and productivity.

The host range for this parasite is highly specific, primarily affecting guinea pigs. The louse lives its entire life cycle on the host, anchoring itself to the hair shafts. By feeding on skin debris and secretions, the pest causes persistent irritation, which is particularly detrimental in crowded farming or research environments.

The biology of Gyropus ovalis follows a hemimetabolous development process. The female lays eggs, known as nits, which are firmly glued to the base of the hair. Given the constant body temperature of the host, the cycle from egg to adult is relatively rapid, allowing the population to reach high levels if left unchecked by the owner.

Signs of infestation include severe pruritus (itching), hair loss (alopecia), and crusty skin lesions caused by constant scratching. The economic impact is felt through the decline in the animal's physical condition and the potential for secondary bacterial infections. If not treated, a severe infestation can lead to significant stress and overall decline in animal performance.

Effective control measures require a combined approach. It is essential to treat all animals in a group simultaneously with appropriate veterinary-approved insecticides. Furthermore, cleaning and disinfecting the enclosure environment is critical, as nits can persist in bedding or housing crevices. Routine monitoring and quarantine of new stock are standard practices to prevent widespread outbreaks.
