Description
The four-spotted sap beetle (Glischrochilus quadrisignatus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Nitidulidae family. It is widely recognized as a secondary pest that typically exploits damaged or decaying plant tissues, attracted by the fermentation odors emitted by wounded fruits and grains.
The beetle primarily targets sweet corn and field corn, often infiltrating ears that have already been damaged by other insects or mechanical stress. Additionally, it causes significant economic damage to various berry and vegetable crops, including strawberries, raspberries, and tomatoes, especially those showing signs of rot or ripeness.
The biology of the species is characterized by a multi-stage development cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females prefer to oviposit in moist environments rich in organic matter or directly on injured plant parts. Development time is highly dependent on ambient temperature, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in a single growing season.
Damage occurs when adults and larvae tunnel into the plant tissue, feeding on juices and pulp. Beyond direct loss of yield, the pest acts as a vector for various fungal diseases. This infestation frequently leads to secondary infections like mold or Fusarium, which can significantly decrease the nutritional value and marketability of the crop.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. The most critical step is to minimize the amount of decaying organic matter and wounded fruit left in the fields. Implementing timely harvesting and controlling primary pests, such as earworms or birds that damage the husks of corn, remains the most effective way to prevent sap beetle outbreaks.
