Description

The Cape potato nematode (Globodera capensis) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae, order Tylenchida. It is a highly specialized pathogen that primarily targets potato crops. Known for its persistent cyst stage, this nematode can survive in the soil for many years, making it a significant challenge for farmers in affected regions and a subject of quarantine concern globally.

The primary host for this pest is the potato. The nematode's developmental stages are closely linked to the root systems of solanaceous crops. By infecting the roots, the parasite disrupts the plant's vascular system, preventing the efficient uptake of water and essential nutrients, which significantly impairs the plant's physiological functions and overall development.

The biological cycle is triggered by root exudates, which signal the nematode larvae to emerge from their protective cysts. Once the larvae enter the root tissue, they induce physiological changes in the cells to create a feeding site. The females grow and eventually rupture the root surface, remaining attached as they develop into mature, lemon-shaped cysts containing hundreds of eggs.

Infection damage is characterized by patchy growth, severe stunting, chlorosis of the foliage, and premature wilting, often mimicking symptoms of drought or nutrient deficiency. When uprooted, infected plants show poor root development and may display visible tiny cysts. The economic impact is substantial due to the reduction in both the quantity and quality of marketable potato tubers.

Integrated management is essential for controlling the population of Globodera capensis in the field. Effective strategies include:

  • Implementing strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of contaminated soil.
  • Using certified potato seed tubers to ensure clean planting material.
  • Adopting long-term crop rotation schemes using non-host species.
  • Planting resistant potato varieties that prevent nematode reproduction.
