Yarrow cyst nematode

Globodera millefolii

Description

Yarrow cyst nematode (Globodera millefolii) is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode species belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. It is a well-known cyst-forming nematode that predominantly infests plants of the genus Achillea, posing a significant risk to the healthy development of both wild and cultivated populations of yarrow.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are yarrow species, where the nematode settles within the root cortex. By forming feeding sites known as syncytia, the nematode diverts the plant's nutrients to support its own growth and reproduction. This parasitic relationship depletes the plant's resources, directly affecting the physiological processes of the host.

The life cycle involves the survival of the species through resistant structures called cysts, which are the tanned bodies of dead females containing hundreds of eggs. These cysts can remain dormant in the soil for many years until environmental conditions and chemical signals from host roots trigger the hatching of the second-stage juveniles, which then infect new roots.

Damage caused by Globodera millefolii is primarily observed through stunted growth, chlorosis, and general weakness of the plants. Since the root system is the main site of infestation, the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients is severely compromised. In heavy infestations, this can lead to premature wilting and death, significantly reducing the density and vitality of plant patches.

Effective management and protection strategies include strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of infested soil. Crop rotation is highly recommended, as it allows for the natural decline of cyst populations in the absence of a host. Furthermore, monitoring the soil for the presence of cysts and ensuring the cleanliness of machinery and tools are essential steps to contain the spread of this harmful nematode in nursery and field environments.
