Tobacco cyst nematode

Systematic position and general characteristics. The tobacco cyst nematode (Globodera tabacum) is classified within the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. This microscopic soil-borne endoparasite is a significant agricultural pest that primarily attacks the root systems of plants in the Solanaceae family.

Host plants. This nematode species has a host range that significantly impacts commercial agriculture. Primary hosts include tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. It can also survive on various weed species within the nightshade family, allowing it to persist in agricultural fields even in the absence of primary commercial crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves stages where larvae emerge from eggs within the protective cyst. The cyst is a hardened, dead female body that protects the eggs from desiccation and environmental stress, enabling the population to survive in the soil for many years until host root exudates stimulate hatching.

Damage and economic impact. The nematodes feed inside the roots, causing cellular damage that disrupts the plant's nutrient and water uptake. Typical symptoms include stunted growth, yellowing foliage, reduced root systems, and significant yield losses. In severe infestations, the crop may show patches of wilted or dead plants, leading to major economic losses for farmers.

Control measures. Managing Globodera tabacum requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Crop rotation using non-host crops to starve the nematode population.
• Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
